Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
